I can easily understand the value of faith in the university setting; I accepted Christ as my Savior as a college freshman!! My Mom insured that I was actively involved in a church everywhere we lived. We moved a great deal in my childhood, so once we moved, Mom would find the nearest Baptist church, preferably one within walking distance, asap. I did most of the "normal" church activities and, for the most part, did what I was supposed to do. As I looked ahead to attending college, however, I fully intended to engage in numerous activities I had NOT engaged in while still living with my Mom. And, to be honest, most of them were neither healthy nor moral!! However, during my freshman year, I realized that, while always having been a "church-goer", I had never truly accepted Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior. My college roommate and a group called the Navigators were instrumental in that revelation and I made a life-changing decision. Like all Christians, I have lived, and continue to live, an imperfect life. But I continue to try to be more and more the person I am supposed to be each day. My faith especially informs how I teach. I must be fair to my students, I must be honest, I must be understanding, and I must do all those things without lowering my standards or accepting less than the best from my students. After 35 years of teaching, I am still working on that!!!
