One day when I was in college, I failed a big exam. Unused to seeing such a low score, my failure was a tipping point. It made me face some questions I’d been avoiding. What if life doesn’t go as I planned? What is my purpose in life? I was a physics major with plans to study astronomy. I saw my studies as a search for the ultimate truth of the universe. How does it work? But, I found I also needed to know if there was an ultimate truth behind the universe. Did God create the universe? If God exists, does he know that I exist? So, I read up on Jesus. I became convinced that he was a real man who rose from the dead and that he is who he says he is. I also became convinced that the bible was true and could be trusted. Trusting that the bible is true allowed me to find in it the answers I longed for. Turns out God made the universe and knows that I exist. He cares about me. He hears my prayers. I know because he answers them. An intellectual understanding of the truth of Jesus’ story was not enough. I stepped out in my new trust and prayed. God answered my prayer clearly and directly, and I knew that I could trust him. I learned that my purpose in life is to enjoy God forever. That means that I can call on him when I need comfort. It means that I can trust that he will forgive me when I fail. It means that I can count on his good plans for my life. And that he will be there for me for the rest of my life and for an eternity after I leave this world. So, by accepting the ultimate truth of God, I was free from worry about my future. I now know God will provide even when my plans fail.
