I spent a few years of my early childhood in Nigeria before starting elementary school in Hong Kong. There was a period in my teenage years when I really struggled with finding meaning in life. I wanted to do something significant and be someone important, but I kept running up against a deep sense that I was "chasing after the wind". I finally found solace in the story about skeptics trying to trap Jesus with the question of whether it is right to pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus inquired whose image is on the currency then astonished his accusers by asking them to "give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” It was astonishing because, rather than addressing the skeptics' concern about his loyalty to the Romans, Jesus subtly pointed to the deeper issue of our loyalty to our creator and image-giver. I must confess that I am still learning this lesson and needs constant reminders that my value and my worth lies not in my accomplishments but in my role as His image-bearer.
