Liz Hathaway

Hey there! My name is Dr. Liz Hathaway and I’m a professor at UTC. My favorite thing about being a professor is getting to interact with students. During my PhD studies, one of my mentors helped me to understand that God gives each of us different strengths. God wired me to be an encourager. Some of my favorite verses about encouraging: • 1st Thessalonians 5:11: Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. • 1st Peter 4:8-10: Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. • Hebrews 3:13: But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” • Hebrews 10:24: And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, You know what’s coming next…encouragement! College is often described as a time of “finding yourself” and this can lead to confusion at times. Here are some reminders that God has taught me during my 12 years as a student (that’s right, 12 years in higher education as a student so I’m basically an expert!): You were created by God and He created you just as He wanted you (Genesis 2:7; Psalm 139:13)! There may be times when you feel the need to conform to the world. During my journey to become a professor there was a period of time when I thought I needed to spend all my time behind a computer with no time left to encourage others (gasp, I know it sounds horrible). I tried to become that person and I was miserable! God graciously reminded me that He created me to be a vessel to allow His light to shine through me. Before trying to become someone that God did not intend you to be, remember who you truly are. You are loved (John 15:9) and you are valuable (Matthew 10:31). There may be times when you feel alone in college, but remember that nothing will ever be able to separate you from the love of Christ (Romans 8:39). No one will ever be able to snatch you from God’s hand (John 10:29) and God will never, ever leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Lastly, know there is a purpose to where you currently are. You have been created for good works which God prepared beforehand for you (Ephesians 2:10) – how cool is that?! So, enjoy your journey and remember you are not alone!
