I am a lecturer teaching Food Systems. It is my way to help people reconnect with food. This is my dream job! But who would have thought I'd get this far and get to this position? I can't but stop and be amazed with my story. To get here I needed a PhD, an extensive working knowledge of food and great teaching skills. I had to be so good and/or have so much money to get from my country to the US to train. I was fortunate I had so much curiosity and an appetite for good food, but other than those, odds were against me to get an excellent international education. I came from a middle family income; we had to borrow money from relatives to finish college. Nobody in the family won big grants/scholarships or was a PhD to point me in this direction. And I don't think I'm that intelligent. Despite all these limitations, I was able to secure a free graduate education, thanks to Fulbright that funded my Masters in Nutrition, and my graduate assistantship that funded my doctoral studies. I can call myself now a food and nutrition anthropologist! You may have your own aspirations and need inspiration. So don't miss this point: It is never an easy journey. What made all these possible for me is INTENSE self-discipline and support (aka SACRIFICE) from friends and family. But I also know, it was not all about my/their work. It is easy to learn in life that almost everything that could go out of control did go out of control. That characterized my journey. I can only attribute all personal connections, opportunities and rectified mistakes as divine appointments and interventions. And I just can't help but continue to thank God for His faithfulness in my professional and personal life.
