I’ve been teaching at East Carolina University for almost 20 years in the College of Engineering and Technology. My classes range from computing to technical writing and presentations, but while I enjoy the subjects I teach, what motivates me most is helping students discover their potential and realize that setbacks don’t define them. Some of that perspective comes from my own journey. At age 19, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which taught me at a young age what perseverance really means. More recently, in 2023, I was diagnosed with epilepsy after being told I had suffered multiple full-blown strokes. It felt as though I had stood before a firing range and somehow walked away alive. In both struggles, I’ve found strength not in myself but in the steady presence of Jesus Christ. I didn’t get quick fixes or easy answers, but I found hope and peace that carried me through the pain and uncertainty. Hope that has changed the way I live and teach. I see students not just as learners, but as people who are often carrying hidden struggles of their own. My goal is to meet them with encouragement and kindness, reminding them that their worth isn’t measured by grades or achievements. Beyond the classroom, I help lead a women’s Bible study ministry called Sisters in Christ International helping women around the world to fix their eyes on Jesus as we read the Bible cover to cover in a year and do life together. For me, ministry isn’t confined to a church or a classroom, it’s about showing love and compassion in everyday encounters. My story is marked by illness, but also by resilience and grace. Each challenge has reminded me that life is a gift and every day is an opportunity to share hope and the love of Jesus with those around me. Whether in the classroom, through ministry or in daily interactions, I want to be someone who reflects that hope to others.
