Murray Rice

I grew up in a Christian family, so the good news about God's love was never far off. I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of my life at the age of four. My childhood was about as exciting as watching paint dry. I've often said that the coming of McDonald's to our suburb was about as exciting as things got. I am grateful for a safe upbringing in a wonderful, loving family. At the age of fifteen, my father passed away unexpectedly, and things changed. I realized that we do not control our own living and dying, and I began to see the need to mature in my faith. Fast-forward a few years, and by the age of 28 I had graduated with three degrees (one in engineering, two in urban/economic geography). I spent a decade getting married, starting a family, and founding and running a consulting business. By the mid-2000s I was ready to follow my professors' urging and pursue an academic career. It was after I came to this conclusion that a faculty position in business geography came open at UNT, and I was fortunate to be interviewed and offered the job. I've spent the last 20 years at UNT, and have loved almost all of it. Looking back, I see the hand of God guiding me and making opportunities to serve and grow available to me at exactly the time I needed them. I am always glad to share my story, so please stop by and see me.
