In 1983-84, the Lord brought 3 influences into my life. I was 2 years out of the Naval Academy. I had finished flight school, and was learning to fly the F-14. 1) My wing lost 9 airplanes and 8 guys in 6 months, 2 guys and 2 airplanes from my squadron the week I arrived. I met Natalie at a dinner for the fresh widow of a company mate, who was killed over Lebanon. The comparative safety of flight training was behind me. Death was commonplace among my 20-something peers. 2) My roommate was a classmate and teammate from Navy Crew. We’d lived together for years. But, I routinely lied to him when I went out at night, a behavior that shamed me. 3) He unwittingly aggravated my struggle by asking me to read the Bible with him. I didn’t want to, but couldn’t refuse my best friend of years. One evening, I read John 3 on my own, where I found an exchange between Jesus and a Jewish Elder. Jesus related, “This is the testimony, light has come into the world, but men are afraid of the light because their deeds are evil, and they’re afraid they will be exposed.” Jesus was talking about me!?!? Accepting Jesus’ offer of forgiveness launched a life of seeking to know him and imitate him. If he came that we might have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10), then this too would have to be my life’s aim. Yes, I teach all things airplane. That’s just my context. I’m really in the people business. I’m privileged to spend my work life assisting and watching young people grow.
