Shariya Dinali Dhammapala

I grew up in Sri Lanka, a country where Buddhism is the predominant religion. Although I was surrounded by many different faith traditions, my family was Christian and actively involved in our local church. My parents played significant roles in the church community, and I attended Sunday school from an early age. As a teenager, I made a personal commitment to Jesus during a youth camp experience and was later baptized. Over the years, my faith journey has included worshiping in different Christian chruches. While I was raised in a Baptist church, my husband comes from a Methodist background, and after immigrating to the United States, we became involved in Presbyterian and other Community Churches. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of being part of a local church family where people can learn, grow, and support one another as children of God. After more than 25 years working with children the Lord called me out of the Early Childhood classroom to support and mentor upcoming young teachers before they enter a classroom. I consider this a privilege and desire to empower and encourage student teachers as well as be a support system in their spiritual journey. My husband and I are particularly passionate about working with young people because our own faith experiences during adolescence had a profound impact on our lives. The sense of purpose and Godly guidance we gained during those formative years have helped shape many of our life decisions and provided strength during challenging times. Life always present both joys and difficulties. For me, faith in Jesus Chirst has been a source of comfort, direction, and meaning. It has encouraged reflection, resilience, gratitude, and a commitment to God and serving others. Looking back on my journey as a wife, mother, educator, mentor, and person of faith, I can see how these experiences have shaped who I am today and continue to influence how I engage with the world and support those around me.
