I grew up in a Christian home, but it wasn't until I was an undergraduate in college (like the current students I teach) that I really came to have a more personal relationship with Jesus. I had read my Bible cover to cover, prayed, and gone to church, but during this time of my life, I had a real encounter with Jesus that transformed my relationship with Him. I used to simply believe in Him, but since this time in my life, I've been getting to know Him. The encounter that started this all was when I went to a college church prayer group and silently, internally, prayed specific words to the Lord. Within ten minutes during that time of prayer and worship, a girl about my age came over to me and shared the exact same words I had just prayed —only to God. I was shocked! How could she know what I had just told the Lord in a silent prayer unless He wanted me to know that He was real, listening, and cared? That was a game-changer for me. Now, I look at life very differently. Instead of distanced religion, God gave me a new faith in His existence, which I can't deny. That moment in my life reminds me of the story of the two men talking on the road to Emmaus with the resurrected Jesus but not recognizing Him until the Bible says, "Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him, and He vanished from their sight. They said to one another, 'Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and opening the Scriptures to us?'" (Luke 24:31-32). Similarly, that day as an undergraduate student, my eyes were opened, and my heart was set on fire for Christ as my Lord and Savior. It is my hope that others can also know the Lord in such a profoundly personal way.
