I have always considered myself to be a Christian, but have had peaks and valleys in my faith life. I have personally found that when I have turned to God and prayed for his direction and guidance, He has provided it. Now, as an older first-time parent to a one year old son (Bennett Lee Sparks), I have thought a lot more about the kind of father and example I want to be. Bennett was baptized at six months old (we are Lutheran) and I hope that I can live in such a way that he will want to be a part of a larger faith community. Reading the many "Baby's First Bible" inspired books that we have received as gifts has reminded me of the important role parents play in the faith development life of children. Let me say as an academic and a researcher, I know how all too fallible "science" can be. I was very fortunate as a graduate student to work under one of most well-respected and published professors in the organizational psychology field, the late Dr. Jerry Harvey, who referred to himself as a "Bible-thumping Southern Baptist." Having him as a role-model helped me have the courage of my religious convictions and I can only hope to inspire the same in my students. William Sparks
