Have you ever thought much about death? As a teenager I did quite a bit and it scared me. I mean this was a fear that gripped me, a fear about the unknown as well as the finality of life. Those fears were very much with me when I went to college and heard the message of salvation - again. But this time it really sunk in and I realized the great gift of Jesus' life and resurrection. I'm still concerned about someday not being around for my young son and I am not exactly sure what heaven will be like but I have a peace and hope I never had in my precollege years. I am not an evangelist and my life is certainly too imperfect to be a lampstand for much of anyone. But I am a believer and it defines me. That is why in my chemistry courses I strive to grow my student's analytical skills and, once or twice a semester, present them with data and scientific principles that question evolution and may open the door to a belief in God and creation. I've been teaching for 20 years and, more than ever, feel that we should pass on more than information. In this day where greed leads some to unethical behavior we should inspire students to lead lives they can be proud of.
